Carbon Nanotechnology

Carbon Nanotechnology is the term used for a material called carbon nanotube. This is a tube-shaped wire made of carbon. It is 10,000 times smaller than human hair, but stronger than steel. This wire has a diameter that can be measured on the nanometer scale, hence the name. Carbon nanotubes are known to be a very good conductor of electricity and heat. Unlike any other known materials; they have the ability to withstand high working temperatures. 

Having these kind of qualities, carbon nanotechnology is used in many different ways. They are most commonly found in LCDs, Touchscreen, Hydrogen cars, and solar panels. They also participate in the environmental causes to remove pollution from the air.

Moreover, this technology can also be used in medical science to treat tumors by functioning as drugs carriers. Normally, the effectiveness of anti-cancer drugs is influenced by their injurious nature and the limited ability to diffuse through cells. This is where carbon nanotechnology comes in handy as it has the ability to pass through cellular membranes. This is why it can be used to carry anti-cancer drugs into the human cells more effectively.

The Future of Carbon Nanotechnology

With the carbon nanotechnology providing unlimited benefits in multiple spheres of this technological world, scientists and researchers have predicted that it will be even more advantageous in the coming future.

  • There has already been a research published showing the benefit of carbon nanotubes in 3D printing of bone structure. Generally, in 3D printing of bone tissue they use a combination of a re-absorbable material and an inorganic bioactive phase material. Mixing the two with carbon nanotube, they discovered that they can actually stimulate the growth of bone cell. That is a huge achievement in the field of medical science and 3D printing.
  • Similarly Chinese researchers have found a way to use carbon nanotubes in the making of new and flexible loudspeakers. Unlike the conventional speakers, these nanotubes speakers use a phenomenon called thermo-acoustic effect. This is used to create sound waves by heating and expanding the air near them.
  • Furthermore, their properties of being stronger than steel but as light as air, while also being stretchy are very helpful. Researchers also believe that carbon nanotubes can help in developing space elevators to lift astronauts, their cargo or maybe even tourists up in the space. By using these materials, they created nanotube ropes that would act as cables for the elevators. It is amazing how far one can reach because of the numerous benefits that carbon nanotechnology has provided.
